Photodynamic Therapy, (Levulan)
For stubborn moderate-to-severe acne, or wide spread Actinic Keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions), PDT with Levulan is a good alternative but requires some down-time.

Dr. Diane Wong, MD is a licensed physician who has been treating clients with ALA-Photodynamic Therapy treatments for active severe acne and for Actinic Keratosis (AK, pre-cancerous skin lesions) in Toronto, Yorkville, and the GTA for over seven years.  A full consultation will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for this treatment.

What is Photodynamic Therapy and How Does it Work?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment that involves the in-office application of a topical solution called Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) also known as Levulan Kerastick.  ALA naturally occurs in the body and this topical solution is absorbed in the skin. The skin then becomes extremely photo-sensitive. The ALA is left on the skin to incubate for about one hour.  After the incubation is complete, a light source is applied on the skin.  IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or Blue Light (Blu-U) are the light sources used at Glow Medi Spa. The light activates the ALA.  Active cells such as cells involved in acne and actinic keratosis are the targets for the activated ALA.  There is minimal damage to the normal surrounding cells. The complete treatment is referred to as ALA-PDT.

Extreme sun precaution must be taken after the treatment.  There are potential side effects and there is down-time associated with this treatment.  It remains a good option for clients who may have tried other therapies without achieving sufficient results.

What are the Potential Complications of ALA-PDT Treatments?

ALA is a very powerful solution and there are potential complications.  In a medical clinic under physician supervision, the technicians are specially trained in working with ALA-PDT and recognizing the contraindications to treatment.  ALA-PDT treatments should not be done on clients with certain medical conditions or skin conditions.  It should be avoided in clients who are taking certain medications.  Actinic Keratosis, severe acne, or any suspicious skin lesions should not be treated until assessed by a qualified physician prior to initiating ALA-PDT treatments.

ALA-PDT treatments should occur in a medical clinic under medical supervision.  Dr. Diane Wong and her highly trained team will see you in consultation and discuss if this treatment is right for you.
