Laser Hair Removal Treatments (Body Hair, Facial Hair, Hairy Underarms)
Dr. Diane Wong, MD is a licensed physician at Glow Medi Spa who has been treating clients with Laser Hair Removal treatments in Toronto, Yorkville, and the GTA for over seven years. Laser Hair Removal treatments of unwanted facial and/or body hair is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments in North America. Clients should choose their Laser Hair Removal clinic carefully. Top quality, medical-grade lasers are available only at physician supervised medical clinics. In addition, proper technician training and supervision is very important. At Glow Medi Spa, to meet the needs of all our clients, we have several options for permanent hair removal, including laser hair removal, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), and electrolysis.
What is Laser Hair Removal and what are the Indications for Treatment?
To permanently reduce the unwanted hair on the face or body, either a laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) light-based system can be used. Optimal selection of technologies and wavelengths depends on the client's skin type, hair type, ethnicity, area being treated, and sun exposure.
Lasers work by emitting a specific wavelength of light that passes deep into the skin and is preferentially absorbed by its target, in this case, hair. The laser used in hair removal targets the melanin (color) in the hair follicle, damaging the follicle and removing the hair. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments emit a broad spectrum of light to target and destroy the hair follicles responsible for hair growth.
Hair growth cycles through three phases: Anagen (growth) phase, Catagen (transition) phase, and Telogen (dead) phase. Hair that is in the Anagen (growth) phase is permanently removed with each Laser Hair removal treatment. Not all the hair is in the Anagen phase at the same time. For example, on the legs, only 20-30% of hair is in the Anagen phase at any given time. Hair that is in the Catagen or Telogen phase will be treated by the laser but the hair won’t be permanently removed and will grow back. However, it can be removed permanently in subsequent treatments as the hair cycles into the Anagen phase. Therefore, several treatments are required, typically 6-8 treatments every 4-8 weeks.

What are the Potential Complications of Laser Hair Removal Treatments?
The lasers and light-based treatments are very powerful treatments and there are potential complications. In our medical clinic under physician supervision by Dr.Wong, the technicians are specially trained in skin typing, choosing the appropriate settings, and recognizing contraindications to the treatment. Laser Hair Removal treatments should not be done on clients with certain medical conditions or skin conditions. It should be avoided in clients who are taking certain medications.
Dr. Wong has written several articles and has made presentations on the complications of medi spa treatments, including laser hair removal. It is worrisome that this type of treatment is being done in local malls, salons, and spas without much regard to the potential risks. We would be happy to see you in consultation and discuss the risks vs benefits of laser hair removal. Educate yourself and choose your practitioner wisely.
