It is recommended to use an SPF of at least 30 and to make it a habit like brushing your teeth. Sunscreens should be reapplied every 2 hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. The average adult should use 35 mL for the entire body (equivalent to one shot glass). Most people don’t apply enough.
Higher SPF protection can be used but many people may be sensitive to certain brands due to the higher concentration of chemicals. The SPF (stands for Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of protection against UVB rays. UVA rays are also harmful but we currently don’t have a good way of measuring and quantifying them. Of note, there are different filters in sunscreens for UVB and UVA rays. The filters that cause the most allergies or reactions are the ones that block the UVA rays (especially Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL).
For patients with sunscreen allergies, a good option is the physical blockers which are zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These don’t penetrate beyond the surface of the skin and are non-toxic. The new micronized forms no longer leave a white colour on the skin like they used to in the past. These physical blockers are broad-spectrum UV filters.
At glow medi spa, we carry a wide variety of medical grade sunscreens. We select the best sunscreens that are effective, will not block the pores and cause break-outs, and ensure compliance since they do not feel overly heavy or smell like sunscreens. We will provide a no-charge consultation to make sure that you choose a sunscreen that is best suited for your skin. Compliance is crucial to effective sun-protection.
Remember, tanning is a sure way to prematurely age your skin. You may think freckles are cute but they don't look that cute when they inevitably get larger and merge together and turn into liver or age spots. Think ahead and prevent sun-damage. All sunscreens at glow medi spa are 20% off for the months of July and August. Call us at 416-920-9998 for a complimentary sun-protection consultation.
