IPL
Photorejuvenation, Intense Pulse Light (IPL), or Broadband Light (BBL)
Complimentary Consultation
Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that is done with the power of intense pulse light. Photorejuvenation may also be known as IPL (Intense Pulse Light) or BBL (Broad Band Light). The BBL technology at glow Medi Spa allows us to customize your treatments by selecting the appropriate wavelength to treat fine lines, sun spots, broken capillaries or other skin imperfections. There are several different wavelengths from 515nm to 590nm. The light energy is placed on the skin and delivers heat which the targeted imperfection will absorb. This will help to diminish the damaged cells. The heat from the light energy will also stimulate and regenerate new and healthy cells as well as collagen. After several treatments your skin will look smoother and more radiant.
Conditions that IPL/BBL or Photorejuvenation can treat:
Photorejuvenation is one of the ultimate skin treatments. It is one of our most popular medical aesthetic procedures. Clients are very happy with the results. It benefits so many skin conditions and it really is a "lunch-time" treatment as it is simple, safe, and there is no down-time involved. Here are some common questions.
Who can have Photorejuvenation?
Males or females with broken capillaries, a flushed appearance, brown spots, enlarged pores, mild wrinkling, rosacea, freckles and hyperpigmentation. Dark skin tones may not be appropriate for photorejuvenation. We will assess you and recommend the treatment that is best for you.
What areas can be treated?
The face, chest, neck, upper back, forearms and hands are the most common areas. Anywhere on the body can be treated.
How does Photorejuvenation work?
The Broad Band Light Technology delivers light pulses to the skin. The colours in the light are attracted to the browns, reds and deeper collagen tissue. The heat generated from the light targets and vaporizes the browns, coagulates the reds and heats the collagen. The body's healing mechanisms take over and slough the browns, absorb the reds and thicken the collagen.
How many treatments do I need?
The average is six, usually one treatment every three weeks. Clients with brown or pigmented skin will notice a significant change after two treatments. Clients with reds or flushing will notice a significant change after three treatments. The final 2-3 treatments will continue to improve the colour, texture and pore size.
Does it hurt?
There is a mild stinging sensation but it is very tolerable. Your face will be covered with cold gel and it reduces the sensation.
How long does a session take?
Generally a full face treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Larger areas will take longer, hands less.
What can I expect after?
Most people can go right back to their usual activity with no down-time. However, we recommend to avoid exercise for 24 hours and to keep the skin as cool as possible. You may have a mild pinkness which can last a few hours. This can be covered with make-up if necessary. If you have brown spots, they may get darker for about a week (like they do when you’re in the sun), and then they will either flake off or fade gradually. If you have a lot of browns or reds, you may have slight swelling for a few days but it is usually not noticable. We apply sunscreen immediately after each treatment and recommend sun protection during the course of your treatment. We will advise you on how to maintain your results. We may suggest a maintenance treatment (a single treatment) every three to six months.
What about sun exposure?
You must not have a tan (change in skin color) for 4 weeks prior to the treatment. During the entire duration of your treatments your skin will be more susceptible to sun damage. We recommend wearing a hat when you are exposed to the sun and a SPF 30 of higher. During the course of the treatments, we can adjust the schedule as needed to accomodate vacation plans.
What aftercare do I need?
A skin care regimen may be recommended to ensure the best and optimal results. Sunscreen is imperative after the treatment.
What should I expect during the treatment?
-
Your skin will be cleansed and assessed
-
Your eyes will be covered with safety shields
-
A cool clear ultrasound gel will be applied to the treated area
-
The instrument will be applied to your skin and the light will be delivered to the area being treated
-
A soothing mask and a cool cloth will be used too cool your skin
-
Medical grade skin care products will be used as well as sunscreen
-
A complimentary mineral make-up application will be provided if needed
What is the difference between Fraxel Laser Treatments and Photorejuvenation?
Fraxel is a laser that treats deep beneath the superficial skin. It is great for improving texture of the skin. Typically, Fraxel is used for conditions such as deep lines and wrinkles, textured skin, acne scars, surgical scars, brown spots, and melasma (pregnancy mask). It creates microscopic thermal injury zones that are then repaired by the skin via the stimulation of collagen. The intense, deep tissue repair improves the overall appearance of the skin in texture and colour. Fraxel treatments do cause temporary redness and swelling which may last 2-3 days so it is not a lunch time procedure but well worth the short period of down-time for the impressive results. See the section on Fraxel Laser Treatments for more information.
Photorejuvenation or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is not a laser. It is a light treatment. It treats the surface of the skin and mainly targets browns and reds. It also stimulates collagen but not to the same extent as Fraxel Laser, so fine lines and wrinkles will improve with IPL but deeper lines require Fraxel Laser. IPL leads to a superficial freshening of the skin and its main benefit is evening out the colour of the skin. It is very popular since the results are excellent and there is no down-time involved. IPL really is a lunch-time procedure.
So for texture, think Fraxel; for colour, think IPL. A personal consultation will help determine which treatment is right for you.
How do I know if photorejuvenation is right for me?
At glow Medi Spa, we often refer to it as the "bread and butter" of our medical aesthetic treatments. It is our most popular treatment since it treats so many skin concerns, has so few side effects, has no down-time, and is quick and easy with great results. Our clients love the results of their IPL/photorejuvenation treatments as it does give the skin that special "glow".
Your skin will be assessed during our complimentary consultation. Commonly, clients are able to start treatments right away unless they have a recent tan.
