Chemical Peel
Complimentary Consultation
There are several peels provided at Glow Medi Spa. They are all medical grade peels which are only available at physicians’ clinics. The reason for this is because of the strength of the chemical peels that can achieve the best results. The active compounds, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, retinoic acid and salicylic acid are of a much higher concentration than would be allowed at a spa or salon. Some of our treatments do not contain acids, but have active ingredients that can similarly treat the surface of the skin. Our peels are also mixed with calming ingredients that soothe the skin so that there are very few side-effects and minimal or no down-time.
We will evaluate your skin, assess your goals, and together we will determine the best type of peel for your skin.
The Benefits of a Chemical Peel
A chemical peel exfoliates the dead, sloughed, superficial skin to allow more vibrant skin underneath to shine through. It takes away the dull grey look and replaces it with a healthy glow. Without layers of dead skin cells blocking the pores, you will be less prone to breakouts, clogged pores and best yet, your at-home products will penetrate better. Even the best moisturizers on the market will have a tough time getting through layers of dead skin cells. By alleviating the blockage, you have just made your products that much more effective.
Chemical peels or microdermabraision, or a combination of the two treatments, are an excellent introduction into the benefits of medical esthetics. These treatments allow you to see, feel and sense the difference in only a few minutes. The procedures are fast and convenient, generally between 30 and 45 minutes. There is no recovery time, so you can get back to your normal routine the very same day.
These in-office medical-grade peels, in conjunction with a home care regime of medical-grade skin care products, can be used to improve the appearance of skin imperfections as well. Concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities such as sun spots or age spots, enlarged pores, mild to moderate acne, and superficial acne scarring can be addressed.
A chemical peel is not painful. There may be a mild tingling sensation and /or itchiness, depending on which peel treatment you are receiving. This sensation only lasts a few minutes and is supervised at all times. After a peel, the skin is sun-sensitive and we will apply a sunscreen immediately afterwards. We also recommend a sun block with an SPF 30 or more for your continued use after the treatment.
Chemical peels can be used on the face or body. Common areas of the body to be treated include the chest, back, and hands for skin rejuvenation, acne, or sun-damage.
It is important to mention that the term “chemical” peel may be deceiving. Although they are considered chemical peels, they are derived from natural ingredients, such as sugar cane, milk derivatives, and fruit acids. Peels have been around for centuries in a much more crude form, but even Cleopatra knew the benefits of using peels to keep the skin glowing and at its best. Medical-grade peels are much more effective and safer to use today, with the supervision of either a doctor or medical aesthetician.

Glow Peels
The Glow Peel is a skin treatment that involves either glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar cane, or lactic acid, coming from milk byproducts. We also offer a salicylic peel for those with a tougher skin type or very oily skin.
The Glow peel helps to remove dead surface cells which cause the complexion to have a grey, dull appearance. The pores may be blocked, leading to breakouts. Glow peels help to promote collagen synthesis, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. The choice of glycolic or lactic will depend on the thickness of the skin, oily or dry skin types, and whether or not the skin is sensitive. Whereas all skin types are most likely to be able to withstand any tingling from the lactic peel, a sensitive or thin skin will rarely be able to withstand a glycolic peel. Our medical aestheticians are very experienced and highly trained to be able to determine the most appropriate peel for your skin type.
The lactic molecule is larger than the glycolic molecule, therefore not penetrating as deeply into the skin. Although the results are similar, even those with a tendency to redness will generally be fine with the lactic peel. We offer various levels of concentration of glycolic acid ranging from 20%-70%.
There is no down time with the Glow peels (excepting salicylic), so many may choose to come on their lunch hour or right after work, and are perfectly fine to go about the rest of their day afterwards. A complimentary mineral based make-up touch up is offered afterwards by one of our trained staff.
Preparing for your Peel
Prior to the procedure we recommend that you discontinue any products with Glycolic acid or Retinol (vitamin A) for two to five days prior to the treatment. As well, we recommend that you stay out of the sun prior to any peels. If you are unsure, please notify the aesthetician prior to your visit.
During the Treatment
-
your skin will be cleansed and examined
-
your skin is prepped for the Glow peel
-
we apply an enzyme mask (from fruit acids) to start the exfoliation process
-
the proper peel for your skin is applied, and timed carefully
-
the skin is neutralized

-
an appropriate moisturizer and/or SPF 30 sunscreen is applied
-
a light mineral based make-up application is applied if desired
Your aesthetician may prescribe skin care products to care for your skin after the treatment.
What to expect after the Glow Peel
There may be a mild pinkness to the skin immediately following the treatment due to stimulation to the area. This usually will subside within 10-20 minutes. You may have some sensitivity for a couple of days to certain procedures following the treatment such as waxing, electrolysis, and hair dyes, etc. Your skin will be sun-sensitive for up to two weeks so we advise sun protection and sunscreen. We recommend doing a Glow peel once every two to four weeks for up to six treatments for best results. Maintenance treatments would be recommended for once per month thereafter.
Other Treatment Options
Although we recommend to all of our clients that they should not tan in general, many clients may still periodically have tanned skin. We do not recommend chemical peels for tanned skin. We will assess your skin to see if you are appropriate for an oxygenating treatment or light microdermabrasion instead. These treatments are safe for tanned skin while still providing that invigorating glow.
