Botox for Underarm Sweating

HYPERHIDROSIS

Complimentary Consultation

What is it?

Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that affects about 3% of the population. It is defined as excessive sweating, more than is required for the body to maintain optimal temperature. Many sufferers are aware of how their daily lives are affected, personally, emotionally and in business. Sweating underarms, hands, and face can give the wrong impression, leaving an emotional, social and /or physical impact on the sufferer.  Many patients report that they have to change their clothes often during the day, always have to wear black, and limit their social activities because of their excessive sweating.

What can be done?

Previously, most sufferers have either just learned to live with this embarrassing and uncomfortable disorder, or they have sought surgery.  Although surgery can be successful for some, there are risks involved, as there are with all surgeries. Some such risks involve infection or damage to the nerve area. As well, some patients have noticed increased sweating in other areas to “make up” for the treated area. This is called “compensatory sweating.”

Other options include using antiperspirants with high levels of aluminum chloride (eg. Drysol).  These over the counter products are often not tolerated due to skin irritation.

Botox injections to the affected area is  the newest answer to the problem. The injection interrupts the signal from the nerve to the sweat gland to reduce the sweating in that area. Tiny needles are used so the discomfort is minimal in the underarm area and it takes only a few minutes.  However, for the hands and feet, you may require a local anesthetic.  At glow Medi Spa, Dr. Wong only does treatments for the underarm area.

Botox is a purified protein, and is natural. It is cultivated through modern methods.  It is very safe and very effective.  Clinical studies suggest that a reduction in sweating was 83% in 95% of participants, an incredible difference! The average treatment lasts about 7 months, while some (over 30%) have results that last well beyond a year.  Results occur within a few days usually.  “Compensatory sweating” elsewhere has not been found in Botox treatments for underarm sweating.

What is social sweating?

For some, making the decision to have the injections is more of a convenience than a necessity. To simply not have to deal with underarm sweating or its odour is well worth the cost of the treatment. Imagine being able to wear your silk blouses all summer long without worrying about unsightly sweat stains.  For others, the controversy surrounding aluminum in their anti-perspirants is enough to create peace of mind with the Botox injections. But don’t worry, although the treated areas will be dramatically reduced regarding sweating, the body as a whole is still expelling toxins and regulating body temperature in the same nature as it should be.

What is the cost?

The cost of the Botox medication used in the treatment of Hyperhidrosis may be covered by your private insurance.  Check your health plan to see if you qualify. There is an injection fee which is not covered by your insurance plan.  For those who choose to have the treatment done for “social sweating” and not due to hyperhidrosis, insurance does not cover the cost.
