At Glow Medi Spa, there are several options available for the treatment of Actinic Keratosis. Actinic Keratoses (AK’s) are usually rough, scaly skin lesions that are caused by sun damage. It is important to treat them because they may be precancerous, so if left untreated, they may lead to skin cancer. They also generally cause clients a cosmetic concern since they are on exposed areas such as on the face, arms, hands, etc.
Various treatment options are available at Glow Medi Spa depending on the size, location, and extent of the lesion. Options include: Cryotherapy, Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, and Fraxel Laser treatments.
Liquid Nitrogen or Cryotherapy is commonly referred to as a “cold freeze” by clients. It effectively removes the lesion but a potential side effect is hypopigmentation (white patches) of the underlying and/or surrounding skin.
Levulan (Aminolevulinic acid 20%) is a naturally photosensitizing compound approved by the FDA and Health Canada to treat pre-cancerous AK’s. It is applied to the skin in our clinic and then activated by a specific wavelength of light, either Blue light (Blu-U) or Intense Pulse Light (IPL). This process is known as Photodynamic Therapy. Levulan increases sun sensitivity for 48 hours and there is redness that can last for about five days.
Fraxel Dual Laser Treatments are also FDA approved treatments for Actinic Keratosis. It is an ideal treatment for clients who are concerned with potential risk of scarring and hypopigmentation with other procedures. Several treatments are required.
It is important to be seen by a physician for any skin lesions prior to treatments. At Glow Medi Spa, Dr. Diane Wong, MD will see the client in consultation and suggest the appropriate treatment. She is the owner and Medical Director of glow Medi Spa and supervises all treatments.
